My Last Video for 2017 Snow Wind and Research

Woke up to a blizzard today, and then 45 minutes later it was clear and calm... This afternoon the winds picked up and when you have snowfall in the temperatures in the teens, it makes for a lot of drifting snow. Good day to do research. I want to put a decorative border on the Viking's base. So spending this next to the last day or 2017 researching border carvings by Vikings. This is my last Video of 2017... See you all in 2018. Man I can't believe I've lived this long.. I was born in 1945.. I couldn't even imagine getting to the year 2000.. let alone 18 years into this century..

The Viking Instructional DVD Re Positioning the Battle Axe and Cleaning...

Changed the positioning of the Battle Axe. I believe the new position actually improves the design and flow of the figure of the Viking. Started the hand holding the Battle Axe, and added the beginnings of a leather wrist wrap. Then I took a brush and with lighter fluid, started to smooth the clay, of the face and the figure.

The Viking Instructional DVD - The Tease From Yesterday Revealed

The Tease was hiding how I created the Robe in the Wind effect. That's on the Instructional DVD. I mostly worked on the robe today, working in around his legs and body and across his chest. I have a lot more detailing on the robe to do. Decided not to put a helmet on his head. I want to portray him in camp when a sudden North Wind and rain hits him and he's trying to shield himself from it's affects.

The Viking Instructional DVD Teaser Today on the Viking

I am to the point of the creation of this figure that I'm getting into some of the things I do, that took me years to figure out, to go onto the next step. I've put 50 years of my sculpting career into my Instructional DVD and this one is one of those tricks I came up with for the next step. Sorry to tease you with this... but if I reveal all in my Youtube videos.. I'm sharing stuff that others are paying to see.

The Viking -Instructional DVD - ReDoing the Head of the Viking

Creating a Viking, Full Figure, Instructional DVD. I've decided to make this Marquette into the Instructional DVD.on creating the figure of a Viking. Day after Thanksgiving... I REDID the head of the Viking today. The old head bothered me.. it was to big for the body of the Viking. So I made a new head, and sculpted it away from the figure of the Viking. Easier to work out his character that way.. Then I added the head and decided to add the beard and his hair.. I believe it really worked out. I have a lot more to do on his new head, but it's getting there.

The Viking Instructional DVD Creating a Viking Sword for the Figure

Creating a Viking, Full Figure, Instructional DVD. I've decided to make this Marquette into the Instructional DVD.on creating the figure of a Viking. Today I broke out my Dremel Tool to shape the sword out of wood... as an armature for the finished sword. Did a lot of research into Viking Swords and found that the blade would have been 29 inches long and the handle about 3.5 inches long.. give or take. So that's what I worked on today.

Approaching Storm - Coloring the Bronze and Final Photos

Finally finished coloring this bronze of Approaching Storm today. Got the base attached and then took some great photos of this bronze. This copy is going to Italy to a client over there.. I'm so excited to get one into Europe..
Approaching Storm

By David Lemon
Edition of 15
18.5 inches tall by 20 inches long and 8 inches deep

Pre-Cast Price $13,000 First Five Numbered Copies Only
Release Price $14,995

This was a piece I started 7 years ago.. It was originally a Mountain Man and his Blackfoot wife coming down a mountain... The Photo on my Title page is me working on the two horses All Those years ago. I lost the vision for it.. so I set the wax aside for all those years.. then a couple of years ago.. I took the mountain man off the front horse and the woman off the back horse.. put the horses on a flat ground and I saw immediately the story... Native Americans had to weather the same storms modern man does. This clay, is of two Southern Cheyenne Warriors, who've been hit by a sudden and powerful gust of wind. It's knocked their horses off balance and has partially spooked them. The warrior on the back of his horse is attempting to control his horse, while the warrior on the ground is attempting to mount his. Looking back in the direction of the wind, the warrior on the ground sees the dark funnel touching the ground. They're left naked to the dangers of the Tornado on the flat open prairie. Review of My MORNING JOE Instructional DVD

Brand New Instructional DVD from 6 months of videos. The Story of Morning Joe Cup of Joe. 1914 Josephus Daniels was appointed Secretary of the Navy by President Woodrow Wilson. Among his Naval reforms were inaugurating the practice of making 100 fleet sailors eligible for the Naval Academy, the introduction of women into the service, and on July 1, 1914, he issued general order 99, which rescinded Article 827, the officers' wine mess. Rumor has it that from that time on, the strongest drink aboard Navy ships was coffee, and over the years, a cup of coffee became known as "a cup of Joe." The first real cowboys appeared in the middle 1800's during the days of the great cattle drives. Their task was to herd wild Mexican "beeves" up to graze on the open ranges of the American West. A cowboy's supper usually included beans, sourdough biscuits, oh yeh, and uh... beef, and (who knew?) strong black kettle-brewed coffee. It's rumored that this coffee could float a horse shoe, kill a Diamond Back rattler, or even make a cowpoke put his six-guns away! (lest his nervous trigger finger stampede the herd...Yipes!) This cowboy, up early, before dawn, trying to focus and formulate if he's alive.. That warm cup in his hand and his old shirt in the other, he waits for the chuck breakfast that cookie if preparin. Till then, he's just numb.

Starting A Figure of a Viking

After 2 weeks of just recouping and recharging, I am now starting an Instructional DVD on Creating A Full Figure Of A Viking. In February 2013, I created a bust, while demonstrating one of Chavant's clays. I'm planning on incorporating this bust into this full figure. Of course that might change as I get into creating this figure.

"Viking"

By David Lemon
Edition of 40
13 1/4 Inches tall 8 Inches at it's widest
(without wood base)

Pre-Cast Price $1,750

A departure from my Western Themes. I created this piece as an Instructional DVD, that you can purchase from the list on the top of the right column.
Viking or also known as Norsemen, are the group of people who spoke what is now called the Old Norse language between the 8th and 11th centuries. The language belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Indo-European languages, and is the earlier form of modern Scandinavian languages. Norseman means "man from the North" and applied primarily to Old Norse-speaking tribes living in southern and central Scandinavia. In history, "Norse" or "Norseman" could be any person from Scandinavia, even though Norway, Denmark and Sweden were different sets of people by the Middle Ages. The Norse Scandinavians established states and settlements in England, Scotland, Iceland, Wales, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Ireland, Russia, Greenland, France, Belgium, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, and Canada[1][2] as well as southern Italy.

Coloring the Bust of the Viking, Watching a Bronze Pour, and Final Touch...

I went to Northwest ArtCasting today in Bozeman Montana.. I had two things I had to do today there. The first copy of my Viking was in Bronze, and we were going to color the first copy of it today. We did .. and I love the way it turned out. "Approaching Storm" is still in clay, and I had a few things to tweak on it before they started to make the mold of it tomorrow. There was a Bronze pour while I was there and just had to video it. So I did.

Partial Eclipse From Todd Connors Studio

I took my home made shadow box up to Todd Connor's Artist Studio to witness the partial Eclipse of the Sun. 150 miles south, in Idaho Falls, was the full Eclipse.. Still it was an amazing experience. It was amazing to feel the temperature get colder. It literally was like someone changed out the 100 watt bulb for a 25 watt bulb. Todd paints a lot of night scenes, he was highly interested in the change in lighting, as he did a quick painting sketch as we went into the dim light.

Making a Shadow Box to View The Eclipse Like Vermeer

I was chastised by a friend for not being interested in watching the Eclipse on the 21st of August 2017... Being that it's Friday and the Eclipse is on Monday, I had to find a solution to view it. So here I show you how to make a simple shadow box to view the Eclipse. Some form of using shadow boxes have been used for centuries, once Telescopes and Ground Lenses were discovered. There's a movie about Tim Jenison, a Texas Inventor and Graphic Designer, who was sure that paintings by Vermeer were painted using Shadow Box, Mirrors and Lenses. A Movie, made by Teller of Penn & Teller, follows Tim as he attempts to solve one of the greatest mysteries in all of art: How did 17th century Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer paint such photo like paintings... The Movies title is, TIM'S VERMEER. It can be seen on Youtube for under $3.00 and purchased on ITunes as well as seen on DVD from Netflix.. It's a fascinating movie. There's a Link to it in my Video Description for this video.

Real Wealth Detailing the Clay

Took a break from dubbing my "Creating a Horse From Scratch" Instructional DVD to detail a clay I've had gathering dust for the several years.
Both figures were individual Instructional DVDs. I combined the two figures to create a single piece.

Creating a Horse from Scratch Instructional DVD Voice Over Time

I'm adding my Voice Over Commentary to my Instructional DVD on "Creating a Horse from Scratch" Disk 2. Talking while I'm sculpting is very hard to do. Especially when you're adding muscles and tendons to the Skeleton of the Horse. So I did it silent in the original video, knowing that I'd be talking my students through as a voice over commentary. Once I finish this, then it is time to convert the videos onto DVD Master Disks for Sale. Keep watching, if you're interested, for when I start selling them.

Approaching Storm Finalizing the Base Today Now It Is DONE

I thought I was finished with this clay on Tuesday. That night I was doing final photos of the clay and while checking the detail, I saw a problem. I hadn't finished the base of the clay, and the Moccasins on the warrior on the ground needed detailing. So Had to delay the clays delivery to the foundry. I'll be taking it to the foundry on Thursday of this week. I'll video that trip.

Monday, July 24, 2017

Approaching Storm The Clay is ---FINISHED---

Putting the finishing touches to the clay today. Delivering it to the foundry on Tuesday of this week. I'm making a change in how I video my work for Youtube. A person who purchased my Instructional DVDs asked a pertinent Question, "Why am I paying for one of your DVDs, when I can get information for free on Youtube". I must say, I've been struggling with that question as well. So I'm making a change in how much I put on Youtube in the future. You'll still see progress on what I'm doing and small snippets of me working on clays, but I won't be putting up videos showing me working fully on the clays. I do have Instructional DVDs where I spend hours going into detail of what I'm doing to create my clays. You can get valuable information on those DVDs.. You can review the ones I have now here at this link.

Approaching Storm Detailing Working on the front Horse Today

I took the clay of "Approaching Storm", apart, to work on the front horse by itself. I designed the piece to be taken apart for the convenience of working on the complete clay. Also it would help the foundry when they make a mold of the clay for the bronze.

Approaching Storm Detailing Brother Stops by Gold Panning on the Rub...

Today, I worked on "Approaching Storm", correcting an arm that fell off at some point in the past couple of years. Added a shield... and back filled. Then my brother Kevin, his wife Linda, and their daughter Kelly stopped by my house. We hadn't seen each other since Kelly was a newborn, 16 years ago. We went to lunch then to Virginia City, and finally near Nevada City, Kelly did a bit of Gold Panning on the Ruby River. Didn't find much gold but found a lot of Ruby Red Garnets.

Approaching Storm Getting it ready for the Foundry Day 1

I'm getting "APPROACHING STORM" ready to be cast into bronze. It's been sitting around my studio, and house for about 4 years, so it's been damaged over time and now I need to repair and finish up the clay for casting.

Putting the Video Together for Part 2 of my Instructional DVD on Creatin...

Working on DVD Part 2, on, "Creating a Horse from Scratch". I have to speed up the videos I shot of my adding muscles to the Skeleton of the Horse I created in DVD Part 1, to get the multiple hours of video down to an hour and a half DVD. It's very time consuming to cut out every long pause there are in each video where I roll clay, or step away from the sculpting stand, but in the long run, it will all be worth it.

Putting the Video Together for my Instructional DVD on Creating a Horse ...

Finished my Horse for my Instructional DVD and Starting Another Project

Finishing up the horse I've been working on for my Instructional DVD on Creating a Horse from Scratch. I set it aside and bring in a major piece I started in July of 2013. It's been sitting in clay for 4 years and I'm finally going to get it cast into bronze. APPROACHING STORM is a clay of two Southern Cheyenne, caught on the Prairie when a Tornado sets down some distance behind them. I love the action of this piece and it's story.

Continuing on My Instructional DVD on Creating a Horse from Scratch

Getting close to the finish on my horse for my 10th Instructional DVD. I hope to have the sculpting done this week and editing of the DVD by the first of next week.. Well at least that's the plan. It's taken me far to long already in the creation of the DVD. I'm already thinking of my next piece..

Coloring The Bronze TROUBLE MAKER

The first copy of TROUBLE MAKER was colored in bronze today. I videoed it from the raw bronze to adding the first Chemicals. The process of coloring bronze goes back 5,000 years, to stone caves and mud shacks in the ancient world. I once held a 3,000 year old Hittite Bronze Sword in my gloved hand. What an awesome feeling that gave me. Looking at the fine detail work in the blade and handle. Perfectly balanced. Green patina was the only sign of it's age. It's always fascinates me when I finally finish one of my bronzes. I've been so blessed by my Heavenly Father, who gave me this small spark of creation, in my hands and fingers. I know where my gift is from. I'm just the vehicle to inspire and create.

Thoughts and Horse Progress

I was working on my horse for the Instructional DVD. The thought occurred to me, I've just sold a full set of my DVDs to a person in Jerusalem... I'm seen all over the world.. 20 years ago, I couldn't even imagine that people on the other side of the world would see me and my videos. But they do.. It just made me pause today and contemplate that. The world is truly getting smaller.

At the Foundry Delivering the clay of THE VIKING and checking on THE TRO...

It was time to deliver the clay of THE VIKING to be cast into bronze. It'll probably take 8 to 12 weeks for that process... While at the foundry I checked on the progress of piece I dropped of a few weeks back of the bust of the cowboy, THE TROUBLEMAKER. It's in ceramic shell. The wax in the Ceramic Mold will next be melted out and then bronze will be poured in. So another couple of weeks on that piece. Got home to a wonderful rainstorm in 48 degree weather.. Love Thunder.

"Mark Twain"

By David Lemon
Edition of 100
16.5 inches tall

Retail Price $2,800

Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 * April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). Scenes of these stories are in relief on the base of this bronze.

Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. He served an apprenticeship with a printer and then worked as a typesetter, contributing articles to the newspaper of his older brother Orion Clemens. David Lemon, the artist of this bronze also worked in Type Setting and the Printing Business in Salt Lake City, before becoming a full time artist.

Mark Twain later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. His humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", was published in 1865, based on a story that he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp, California where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention and was even translated into classic Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers.

Thought it was time to repost this video of one of my Instructional DVDs that are currently available for purchase.

Instructional DVD by David Lemon Review CREATING SWEETGRASS ...

Thought it was time to repost this video of one of my Instructional DVDs that are currently available for purchase.

Instructional DVD In Production On Creating a Horse from Scratch

I Show a brief look at the Video I've been shooting for my new instructional DVD entitled "Creating a Horse From Scratch". I'll announce sometime in the future, when this DVD will be available. So stay tuned.

What Tools I use to Sculpt With and Kind of Clay

I show the tools I use to sculpt with in this video. An artists tools are so important. Bad tools get armature results. If you want to become more professional in you creations in clay, tools, and their quality make a huge difference. I also talk about the clay I use and how I soften the Plasticine so I can use it. This clay is non hardening.

The Viking Filling in Holes and Fine Tuning The Hair

Putting the finishing touches on THE VIKING today. Need to make the clay more foundry friendly. What I mean by that is filling in holes and cracks and deep recesses in the clay. Anything that requires extra time to take care of in the production of a bronze will end up hitting my bank account. So time taken now to refine the clay will save the foundry time when the produce the bronze copies. This bronze will be in a limited edition of 40.

Unconquered Adding Clay to the Loin Cloth

After letting the wax on the loin cloth to set up and cool. I then started adding clay to the waxed rag. Once that sets then I'll go over the cloth and touch it up.. Next step is to take quality photos of the clay for Promotional Purposes.

Friday, May 5, 2017

Unconquered Hot Wax and a Loin Cloth

Finished up attaching the Bow Quiver to his back. Then it was time to melt wax and make a loin cloth. If you're under the age of 21, do not mess with melted wax. I'm warning you, you can give yourself some very sever burns. Since I'm 71 years old.. I figured I was old enough to do this part on my own.

Unconquered, Creating the Plains Indian Bow Quiver

I had the bow and quiver laying on the ground. He ran out of arrows and dropped them. I thought that it might be confusing for viewers of the clay or the finished bronze, as to what was that on the ground. So I decided, better to have it on him empty, than a pile on the ground.

Sitting Bull - Finishing Up This Small Sculpture

Finished up the small clay of "Sitting Bull". A Hunkpapa Lakota holy man who led his people during years of resistance to United States government policies. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him, at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement. This small clay is an attempt to capture his image.

The Viking - Brief Touching Up Before The Foundry

The Viking is one of my Instructional DVDs I have available. I made this bust a while back. Thought it was time to get a bid from the foundry on how much it would cost to re-produce if I decided to. So I cleaned it up a bit. Didn't take long because it was already mostly done.

Troublemaker Finishing up the clay for the Foundry

Putting the finishing touches on the clay of "TROUBLEMAKER". This will be a limited edition bronze. I'll be taking the clay to the foundry on Tuesday.

Thursday, April 27, 2017

Cleaning up The Trouble Maker

I started this bust September 14th, 2012. It's been sitting around collecting dust since then. I've decided to clean it up and get it to the foundry to get an updated bid on casting it in Bronze. I'll also take a piece I did last year of Sitting Bull to get a bid on when I take several of my clays in next week to get bids on. This will help me put accurate selling prices on all of them.

Attaching The Three Feathers To The Scalplock

Attaching the three feathers into the wax Top Knot of the Scalplock to make it one unit that can be detached by the foundries mold maker. Keeping the feathers in their set positions. Then painting the wax to match the clay.

Thursday, April 20, 2017

Working in Wax Making the Top Part of the Scalplock

Slow but sure this piece takes shape. To support the weight of the wax feathers I have to create a wax hair piece for them to mount in. So today, I was trying to figure out how to do that. I also like the idea that at the foundry, when they mold the feathers, they can remove the whole feather unit to mold separate.

Creating a Scalplock

I asked the expert of all things Native American, Michael Badhand, "How would the feathers be attached on the back of the warrior's head?" He said they'd be stuck into his "Scalplock". So today was spent creating the Scalplock and texturing the hair. Finally attaching the feathers. I'm really like the feel now. Much more than when he had a Buffalo Headdress on.

Hair and Feather Arraignment

The feathers I painted on Friday are ready for mounting. I just have to figure the best arraignment for them. How I arrange them will determine how dramatic this piece will eventually look. First I have to continue with the hair. How that's designed can make or break the total design of the piece.

Creating Feathers in Wax and a Friend Stops By My Studio

I sold a full set of my Instructional DVDs to a fella who dropped by my studio in my new house today. Rick Smith is from Georgia, and he came by to watch me sculpt a bit and then we went on a tour of the Ruby Valley and Virginia City and Nevada City, Old Gold Rush Towns over the mountain from where I live. I fine tuned a feather in wax and then painted it to look like the clay. I had another feather that was already finished that I painted as well. It was all the time I had to do these two feathers. Next video, Hair and Feathers.

Creating a Hair Style for the Warrior

Wasn't intending to work on the clay today. I have a lot of unpacking to do in my New Digs. I couldn't stand to look at the bare head and not do something. So I took a timid step to start the hair today.

Power Outages and Research

A day of high winds and many power outages. I threw in the towel trying to sculpt with the lights going out over and over again. I turned to, while the computer was on, researching hair styles. I have lots of photos of models.. but I like to take a look at the past, for hair styles and feather arrangement.

Scaling Feathers and Fine Tuning the head

Continuing what I started yesterday. Feathers and ear... and facial features fine tuned.

Texturing and Making A Change

Texturing the clothing of the warrior, then made a major change, in the head area. I ripped off the headdress and will be re-doing his head gear. Not sure yet what I'll do, but I hope it will be better.

ASMR, Back in the Saddle Again - Well Sculpting That Is

After months of not sculpting.. I'm back and pre-pairing a clay to be cast into bronze. James Harold Gallery in Tahoe City California want to promote this clay. I need to get to the point where I can take it to the foundry to get a bid on it so we can set a selling price.

I'm Done Moving Next Week Back to Sculpting

Next to Last Day Moving the Studio

Got a late start at the studio today. Donna Evans is a volunteer Ambulance person and she had to make a run to Bozeman. We got started about 1 pm today. My task was to go through the last of the stuff, tools and pictures and reference materials and separating them into boxes. Then we loaded up a couple of tables, fans and boxes to take to my house. The whole front of the studio is cleaned and cleared out. The back part still cluttered but after today it's down to just a few things left to move. I'm so excited because the house has lots of room even after all that was delivered today. Tomorrow will be the final day of the move.. then it's my turn to go through all that I have in the house and in my storage shed. Once again trashing and saving.

4 AM In My New Digs

Old people sleep in 2 to 3 hour segments. I slept for 3 hours and got up to get a drink of water, and step outside for a breathe of fresh air. 41 degrees outside and is was just wonderful with rain. Love the smell of rain. I'm surprised at how quit this house is. Windy or Rainy, it's just so quite. Well, time for me to head back to bed. Hope all of you have an amazing next to last day of March 2017.

Clearing the Old Studio and Setting up the New Studio

Another day of moving, but the end is in view. Moving out of the old studio, and into my new home. Believe me I'm throwing so much away. Amazing over the past 17 years how much I collected so much useless crap. A lot of old expired computer floppy disks.. and programs. Reference material printed out for projects and kept piling up.. I'd say, 80 percent of the stuff in the studio has now found a home at the town's dump.

Starting The Move From the Studio And A Story With A Happy Ending

Another Day of Moving.. found a Sailor Hat that I wore in the Navy that Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller both signed. Cleared out the boxes.. Started bringing stuff from the studio.. My Radial Arm Saw fell out of the back of the truck bringing it to my house... Happy ending, Cooper Taylor saw it happen.. Picked up the saw and what was left of the table it was on.. and once he found out the saw belonged to me, He brought it right over. Thanks very much Cooper..

Nearly Done with Boxes Soon My Studio Boxes Will Take Their Place

Today we had an all out attack on the stacks of boxes.. and we are near the end of the stuff from the old house. Tomorrow we will clear up the remainder of what's in my living room. When I say we, I mean three people are helping me Donna Evans and her two boys Arlis and Ellis. Man I couldn't have done this without them. Donna is a volunteer on the Ennis Ambulance and she was called away early to help transport a patient to Bozeman.. But the Two boys stuck it out. Tomorrow, we try to finish the house then head over to the studio to start bringing that over to the house.

First Day of Moving From My Studio To the House

Monday and I'm just taking the first steps to moving from my studio in the Ennis Trade Center to my house, about a distance of 2 miles. It's going to be a long week for sure.

Friday, March 17, 2017

Unpacking and Trashing Still

slow process. I have to make room for the stuff from my studio.. which is separate from my old house. I have some items that need space and I need to open that space up. I feel I'm finding me as I go through my piles of stuff... Nothing "American Pickers" would be looking for.. Just plain stuff. It's all going to take time and I hope I can wedge sculpting in there somewhere.

Been a long time since I've actually sculpted anything. A lot of reasons why... For the past 4 weeks I've been looking for a new home to live in. Found one and now I'm preparing to pack up 30 years of memories in the house I'm in now and move into a new one. It's not been an easy year so far. I probably still have a month for moving and setting up. I will be back
