Drawing a Dream

Woke up this morning after having a vivid dream of me creating a monumental bronze of a figure briskly walking with a blanket not quit fully wrapped around him or her... I could feel the shape, but didn't actually see it.. Hard to explain, but that's how I visualize something.. feel rather that see.

Ghost Dance - Putting the Clay Aside for a While

Decided to put the clay of the Dancers aside for a while. I felt like a ship running aground on a beach, grinding to a sudden stop. I'm going to start something new or finish up a older piece. I'll revisit this clay at a later date.

Ghost Dance - The 7th Figure Started - Dedication to my friend Kelly Kivlin

Started working on my clay today and a friend called me and told me of three of my friends here in Ennis Montana had recently passed away.. One of them was Kelly Kivilin who's been a friend of mine for many years. Dying so young is devastating... to die from complications while getting Chemotherapy is even more saddening. My Daughter Heidi is a Breast Cancer Survivor. I lost my two sisters to this horrible cancer. Debbie and Pam.... I miss them terribly. If you feel you can donate to Breast Cancer Research click on this link.

Ghost Dance - 2 days and that Many New Ideas

Started working on this late last night. I was looking at this piece the last time I worked on it and had a flash of a thought. Put a Buffalo Robe on the one figure of a man with a robe already on him. So last night I started that idea. Today I completed the idea and then had another flash of inspiration of adding figures within the circle. So that's what I started today.

Ghost Dance Night Of Scary Things at my Door I play with Clay

Just turned 71 two days ago.. so this is my first video in my 71st year. It's Halloween and many scary creatures were coming to my door while I worked on this clay tonight. Almost finished with it.. Just had an idea of what to do with an empty space on the piece.. I'll get to that the next time.

Ghost Dance - Inspiration in the Middle of the Night

Was just getting ready for bed. Went to my sculpting stand to turn off the light, and just for a moment, I glanced at the clay before turning off the overhead light. I saw a flash of a blanket off the shoulder of one of the woman dancers. I turned off the light, but that vision stayed with me. About a half hour later, I had to do something while I could still see it in my mind. So I went to the clay and started to add that blanket I saw. A vision.. who knows.. but I had to act on it. Granted, a robe is a small thing, but not at this moment, it wasn't.

Ghost Dance - The hands Have It

Today I took all those hands I created last Friday and started to join them to the arms waiting for them... Then painting them to match the clay.

Saturday, October 22, 2016

Ghost Dance - Last Day On The Hands, FINALLY

Got paint at the hardware store, to paint the wax hands, to make them look like the clay. Less confusing to the eye that way. I then finished doing the hands for the figures of the Ghost Dance piece at my computer table, in wax. I'm using the wax because it holds detail better than clay at the size I'm doing them.

Ghost Dance Back to Wax Hands New Method to Make Them Uniform

The toughest part of this clay has been doing the hands.. So small, and a real need for proportion. I finally figured it out. I woke this morning with an idea. Size the hand on my publishing program, Printmaster Gold 18, size them and use the outlines as a guide. Well it worked.. I can still keep my hands sketchy but at least they'll not be awkward.

Ghost Dance - Back at it Again

Been a long absence. I had the workshop last week in Texas and then suffered from an inner ear infection that threw my balance off... But today.. I'm back and feeling great. I am reworking the hands of course and hope to have them done by tomorrow. Just had to scale them to fit the figures.

Ghost Dance Hands Fail

Working on the hands and just as I was finishing them.. and then actually putting them with the figures.. I came to the realization... they're way to big. So redoing the hands will have to wait till next week. I'm spending tomorrow getting ready for my trip to Texas the next day.. I also decided not to put any videos up till I get back from the workshop. Staying with friends and the last thing I want to do is be working on videos instead of visiting..

Running Errands, Talking About Workshop, Talking about a Bear Attack

Leaving for Texas on Wednesday of this week and will be doing my workshop over the weekend... A rainy cold day in my town for the past two days. This is me, just going to the post office and the store.. Real exciting stuff, but just what I do on a daily basis..

Ghost Dance More Hands

Finally got back on the hands. I'll be working on them today, and then adding them onto the figures next.

Ghost Dance Using My New Vise Making the First Hand

I used my new Articulated Model 209 Vacuum Base Precision Vise today for the first time. It was a great tool. I started the hands for the Ghost Dance piece. I used wax for the first hand. I am using wax because it's more durable. Especially since the hands are so small. Using wax I don't have to make armatures for fingers.. The wax will hold it's shape better.

Just Recieved My Articulated Model 209 Vacuum Base Precision Vise

I ordered a articulated vise to hold small parts of my sculpture as I work on them.. I just got me one today.

Sugru is the world’s first mouldable glue that turns into rubber. Invented by Jane and made with love (and science) in the UK, Sugru is here to make fixing and making easy and fun. Pretty cool. I noticed my wire wasn't held well because of the way the jaw faces are constructed.. They sell rubber slip over covers, but I didn't want to spend more money and wait another week.. So I got the last of my Sugru out and made my own pad from it.

Ghost Dance - Puttering Around With the Clay

I'm holding off working on the hands till I get a new articulated vice to hold them in. I expect delivery on the 22nd of September (tomorrow) and can't wait to use them for the first time. I worked on the robe of the one warrior and then added several feathers on the back of his head. I really love the way this piece is coming together.

Ghost Dance - Deer Skin Shirt and Blanket

Tried to create a Deer Skin shirt. Native Americans would tan their hides with the brains of the animal the skin came from.. It's a very labor intensive. Google "Brain Tanning". It's amazing. Brain Tanned Leather is the finest leather you can ever buy.. Very very expensive.

Ghost Dance Last Figures Face Today

Good day today. Felt good, and my numb index finger on my right hand wasn't as numb today. I'm tellin ya.. getting old ain't for the young.. haha I went to the local Fly Shops.. Ennis Montana is famous for it's fishing on the Madison River. I found out how expensive that sport can be today. I went to a couple of Fly shops and asked about Fly Tying Vices today.. Like art supplies, fly tying supplies are over the wall expensive. So I made a jury rigged vice grip.. It worked just fine..

Ghost Dance Creating a Medicine Wheel that one of the Dancers Will Be Ho...

I decided to add a sacred Medicine Wheel to this piece today. Lakota Medicine Wheel The Native American medicine wheel is a sacred symbol used by indigenous Plains tribes to represent all knowledge of the universe. Circle - The circle represents the sacred outer boundary of the Earth often referred to as the Sun Dance Circle or the Sacred Hoop. It represents the continuous pattern of on-going life and death. Lines - The horizontal and vertical lines represent the sun and man’s sacred paths; the crossing of the two lines indicates the center of the Earth where one stands when praying.

Winterizing my Studio

Moving from my main studio into my home studio. I do this each winter because it's just less expensive to pay for heating in my home rather in both the studio and home. I'll be back to sculpting tomorrow. See you all then.

Madison Valley's Veterans Memorial - David Lemon's Monumental Bronze - V...

A video I made 10 years after 9/11... of a Memorial that I was a part of, on July 4th, 2001. Just a few months before the attack on our country in September 11, 2001. I still get man tears..

Ghost Dance Last Dancer today and Base Re sizing

I only got 4 hours sleep last night.. While editing this video.. I'd be sound asleep.. so if I missed any edits.. that's why. Before adding the last figure on this base.. I thought it best to cut down the base a bit. I'm happy how this clay is working out.

Ghost Dance Working on the Fourth Figure of a Warrior

Started on one of the two figures on the back part of this piece. I'm creating a bare chested warrior expressing a voice to the spirits of fallen warriors. Crying out his dream of having the restoration of his lost way of life.

Ghost Dance Dressing the Woman Dancer

Worked on the second woman again today. Added a blanket wrapped around her waist...

Ghost Dance Real Time Sculpting of a Dancer's Head and Face

You may think all this comes easy to me... with 51 years of sculpting under my belt.. Well I've been scared to do this face since the last time I did a video.. I just couldn't face it till today. Yeah I was scared. I decided, face your fear and see what happens. I'm not unhappy with how it turned out.

Ghost Dance Sketch Dressing the Male Dancer

Back to work on the second figure next to the woman. It's a male and he's wearing a leather shirt. I rearrange the arms into a interesting gesture, and then push his head into the shoulder and arm of the left arm that's up in the air. I also explain a bit about the numbness I'm experiencing in my thumb and index finger of my right hand. Nothing bad, but it does hurt.. often causing me to grunt and breath hard as I work. It is a bit painful at times.

Friday, August 5, 2016

Ghost Dance Sketch Female Figure and Change of Clay

Started working on the figure of a woman in this composition of Ghost Dancers. I realized that the Clayette Clay may not work for me on a small figure. Still a great clay, but to hard for this figure. I had a box of Chavant's NSP (None Sulphur Plasteline) Clay soft... it was buried under another box in the back of my studio.. Found it yesterday as I was cleaning the back room.. So pulled it out and started using that clay.. So much better..

Tuesday, August 2, 2016

Ghost Dance Sketch Got a Little Frustrated

Worked on the base to make it easier to take apart so that I can work on the figures easier. Towards the end of the day, with new clay, and a design that's really complicated.. I was getting frustrated by the end of today. I'll be back in two days to work on it.. Maybe with a bit of a cool down, I'll get back on track.

Monday, August 1, 2016

Ghost Dance Sketch Design Change

I didn't like the first design... so I'm taking another rout.. We'll see how this one turns out. Stay tuned.

Ghost Dance Sketch for a New Piece Part 1 and 2

I've wanted to do another Ghost Dance bronze for years. I did one back in the early 90s, it was called, "Dance of Dreams". The Ghost Dance religion (or movement) was an answer to the subjugation of Native Americans by the U.S. government. It was an attempt to revitalize traditional culture and to find a way to face increasing poverty, hunger, and disease, all representing the reservation life of the Native Americans in the late nineteenth century. The Ghost Dance originated among the Paiute Indians around 1870. However, the tide of the movement came in 1889 with a Paiute shaman Wovoka (Jack Wilson). Wovoka had a vision during a sun eclipse in 1889. In this vision he saw the second coming of Christ and received warning about the evils of white man. The messianic religion promised an apocalypse that would destroy the earth and the white man. The earth then would be restored to the Native Americans. Salvation of individuals was to be achieved by purging oneself of the evil ways learned from the whites. The religion required frequent ceremonial cleansing, meditation, prayer, chanting and of course dancing the Ghost Dance. Each ceremony lasted for five successive days. The participants danced each night, on the last night the dance continued until morning. The ceremony was to be repeated every six weeks. Within a year, the new religion spread throughout the Native camps in the West, giving Native people the much needed hope. White settlers reacted differently to the new religion. Some traveled to the reservations to observe the dancing, others feared the possibility of an Indian uprising. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) eventually banned the Ghost Dance, because the government believed it was a precursor to renewed Native American militancy and violent rebellion. The reaction of the BIA is somewhat ironic, since one of the goals of the agency was to convert the Natives to Christianity. The agency did not recognize that the Ghost Dance religion's fundamental principles were parallel with Christianity and brought many Indians to believe in one God. Misunderstanding and ignorance were part of the BIA decision. Wovoka's message clearly promoted pacifism and warned before making any trouble with the whites or refusing to work for them. However, spreading rumors of Indian treachery ignited fear and panic. In November 1890, president Benjamin Harrison ordered the military to take control over Lakota Sioux reservation in South Dakota. On December 29, 1890, 300 Lakota men, women and children were killed in an event that came to be known as the Massacre of Wounded Knee. What started as a peaceful religious movement in 1889, was brutally ended a year later by the U.S. military. The photos below are of "Dance of Dreams" created in 1991.

Sitting Bull's face gets adjustments New Design Takes Shape

Started taking a rough face of Sitting Bull and refining it a bit. Then I had an idea on how I can make the figure even more interesting...

Tuesday, June 21, 2016

Small Figure - Well Sitting Bull is looking like Sitting Bull

Yesterday I worked on the face of Sitting Bull. Today I started to develop the rest of the story. Sitting Bull, born 1831 – December 15, 1890. was a Hunkpapa Lakota holy man who led his people during years of resistance to United States government policies. He was killed by Indian agency police on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation during an attempt to arrest him, at a time when authorities feared that he would join the Ghost Dance movement.[

Small Figure - Starts to take the Shape of a Famous Figure from the Old...

In a few days will be the 140th anniversary of Custer's Last Stand.... This morning, I was thinking the face I created yesterday reminded me of Sitting Bull's face. So I gathered all photos of the Lakota leader and went to work on his features.. We'll see if it turns out or not.

Second day on this small figure.. I start out by showing some new ball tipped sculpting tools I purchased from www.etsy.com/shop/AMCreatures. I then start working out the face of a Cowboy.. Yep.. I'm doing a cowboy. Got as far as his hat. It didn't work out so I'll be redoing that next time I get to this clay.

Reviewing Clay Samples From Chavant Clay

I give a review of Chavant Clay in this video. It was a clay I started with back in the early 70s... Over time I tried other clays but they just didn't have the quality of Chavant. I received a large box of samples from Chavant and here I go through them and evaluate each on it's own merit for color and durability. Plasteline was developed by Claude Chavant in 1892, and trademarked in 1927. I think over the past 124 years, they've just gotten better with the clay product they produce. So I hope you get something from this video.

1st Of My Resin Horses Received

Beginning of August, 2015, I put on a Demonstration at Sculpture Depot's store in Loveland Colorado. I've planned on selling bronzes of three of the small Maquettes statues. I was introduced to Resins by Karen, CEO of Sculpture Depot in Loveland. This is the first one I've received. It's Resin and has had bronze colored resin, poured into the mold. It's simply amazing. I'll be selling these in a limited edition at a fraction of the price of the bronze.. I'll also use it to display in galleries.. to take orders off the resin for bronzes... I'm very excited about this.

Unconquered Fine Tuning and Creating a Hair Shirt

The War Shirt / Shirt Wearers Shirt / Scalp Shirt Today, I attempted to create a Hair Shirt... or War Shirt. The original shirt wearers earned the right to wear War Shirts through great acts of bravery and deeds that were incorporated into the designs. Over a warriors lifetime, he would probably have owned more than one shirt. Some War Shirts were also thought to possess intrinsic spiritual powers which were transferred to the wearer. Buffalo hide was too thick to use, so the maker used Elk or deerskins. However, the ideal hides came from mountain sheep that roamed the Rocky Mountains to the Missouri River and beyond. After the shirt was made, it could be decorated in many ways. Hair from humans or horses often extended from the quilled arm strips and down the outside of the shoulder strips. Shirts with hair have been called scalp shirts, but they were only made with hair locks.

In Early August 2015, I was doing a demo over several days, at Sculpture Depot in Loveland Colorado. While there I took a video tour of this amazing store where everything that deals with sculpting supplies is located. Tools, clays, plaster, mold making materials, resins, and anything else related to the sculpting can be purchased. At the 2nd half of the video, Karen Richardson, President and CEO of Sculpture Depot, demonstrates pouring Resins. www.sculpturedepot.net

Unconquered Scaling A 1873 Springfield Trap Door Carbine For My Sculpture

Today, I'm preparing to create a 1873 Springfield Trap Door Carbine for the clay of "Unconquered". Using PrintMaster Gold 18, publishing program, I show how to scale you're items to the size of the clay your creating. This can be done for any project you're sculpting, by using the head length you using in your sculpture. The average head length is 8 1/2 inches. So knowing that it makes it easy to scale to a ruler you've scanned into your computer.

Heading to Bozeman to Help a Fellow Artist With a Monumental Clay Dead...

Got a text from a sculptor friend of mine in Bozeman Montana last night asking me for help with a monumental project he had to have done in two days. Artists stick together, and try to help when we're able to. This artist several years ago helped me with getting a large clay to the foundry in Bozeman.. How could I turn him down..

Unconquered - Drawing What the Back of the Shield Should Look Like From ...

Waited for a drawing to be sent me through Facebook of what the back of a Plains Indian War Shield would look like. Very little is ever shown of the back of shields for reference. Micheal Badhand said he'd draw up a fast sketch of what I needed.. I got it late this evening. It was everything I needed to do the shield right. Micheal's books are available on Amazon. There he's listed as "Micheal Bad Hand"

Unconquered - Making a War Shield

Today I re-worked the war shield for Unconquered. There were four types of shields which were used on the Plains: the dance shield which was a lightweight version of the war shield; the medicine or holy man's shield, the miniature shield, which was a small copy of a warrior's war shield , and which he sometimes carried on long journeys in place of the war shield; and the war shield itself. The war shield was made in three varieties. The least-used variety, was made by stitching four or five layers of flat rawhide together, cutting these in a traditional round shape, and then decorating the front side of the hide with feathers and strips of cloth. A second variety was made by forming the hide around a wooden hoop. Many kinds of hoop shields were constructed, but these called for a thinner and weaker hide than those made by the third means, which was the heat shrinking process. Most war shields by far were fashioned this way, for the shrinking produced a thick hide and it was easier to press into a concave or convex shape which aided in deflection of weapons hitting it. Prior to the arrival of the horse, Plains war shields were quite large-often being three feet or more in diameter. These were much to cumbersome for mounted men, though, and so the size was reduced until the average war shield measured only eighteen inches in diameter.

Unconquered - Creating a Stone Headed War Club our of a Twig and a Lump ...

Yesterday I was just feeling so good, but then today, had a heavy lunch and I wasn't feeling so good. Because of different things.. I've been eating very little. Mostly soups, or sandwiches. Nothing substantial at all. Well today I got my lunch from the local Market Deli. It was heavy eating for the first time in a long time. So it didn't sit well. Thus a short day of creating. I decided on the war club for this clay. A stone headed war club. Very lethal in hand to hand combat. I started with a twig off my Crab Apple Bush next to my front porch for the club part and then made a wax rock. Seems to be working well.
