Cleaning up The Trouble Maker

I started this bust September 14th, 2012. It's been sitting around collecting dust since then. I've decided to clean it up and get it to the foundry to get an updated bid on casting it in Bronze. I'll also take a piece I did last year of Sitting Bull to get a bid on when I take several of my clays in next week to get bids on. This will help me put accurate selling prices on all of them.

Attaching The Three Feathers To The Scalplock

Attaching the three feathers into the wax Top Knot of the Scalplock to make it one unit that can be detached by the foundries mold maker. Keeping the feathers in their set positions. Then painting the wax to match the clay.

Working in Wax Making the Top Part of the Scalplock

Slow but sure this piece takes shape. To support the weight of the wax feathers I have to create a wax hair piece for them to mount in. So today, I was trying to figure out how to do that. I also like the idea that at the foundry, when they mold the feathers, they can remove the whole feather unit to mold separate.

Creating a Scalplock

I asked the expert of all things Native American, Michael Badhand, "How would the feathers be attached on the back of the warrior's head?" He said they'd be stuck into his "Scalplock". So today was spent creating the Scalplock and texturing the hair. Finally attaching the feathers. I'm really like the feel now. Much more than when he had a Buffalo Headdress on.

Hair and Feather Arraignment

The feathers I painted on Friday are ready for mounting. I just have to figure the best arraignment for them. How I arrange them will determine how dramatic this piece will eventually look. First I have to continue with the hair. How that's designed can make or break the total design of the piece.

Creating Feathers in Wax and a Friend Stops By My Studio

I sold a full set of my Instructional DVDs to a fella who dropped by my studio in my new house today. Rick Smith is from Georgia, and he came by to watch me sculpt a bit and then we went on a tour of the Ruby Valley and Virginia City and Nevada City, Old Gold Rush Towns over the mountain from where I live. I fine tuned a feather in wax and then painted it to look like the clay. I had another feather that was already finished that I painted as well. It was all the time I had to do these two feathers. Next video, Hair and Feathers.

Creating a Hair Style for the Warrior

Wasn't intending to work on the clay today. I have a lot of unpacking to do in my New Digs. I couldn't stand to look at the bare head and not do something. So I took a timid step to start the hair today.

Power Outages and Research

A day of high winds and many power outages. I threw in the towel trying to sculpt with the lights going out over and over again. I turned to, while the computer was on, researching hair styles. I have lots of photos of models.. but I like to take a look at the past, for hair styles and feather arrangement.

Texturing and Making A Change

Texturing the clothing of the warrior, then made a major change, in the head area. I ripped off the headdress and will be re-doing his head gear. Not sure yet what I'll do, but I hope it will be better.

ASMR, Back in the Saddle Again - Well Sculpting That Is

After months of not sculpting.. I'm back and pre-pairing a clay to be cast into bronze. James Harold Gallery in Tahoe City California want to promote this clay. I need to get to the point where I can take it to the foundry to get a bid on it so we can set a selling price.
