I'm so excited and couldn't wait to send these pictures to you. I feel like a kid in a candy store.(and I'm 67). As you can see, I finally put my little "Maidu Dancer" (California native) into bronze. Finished it last night with the foundry and will put a patina on it tonight. For my first clay to bronze ever, I'm pleased. You do know that you're my inspiration. Following your blog I've learned so much and I can't say enough "thank you's " , so... thank you again for your encouragement.
I should have started this 30 years ago!

Bozeman Airport Medalions - William Clark's Portrait - As well as a very interesting shadow on the Madison River Today

I was driving to Bozeman Montana yesterday afternoon, and driving north east along the Madison River, when this shadow of a Bear's head caught my eye.. I nearly drove off the road. I came back to the same spot 24 hours later to see if I was imagining this. Well Not only did I see a bear, I saw a wolves head in the same shadow just a couple of minutes after the bear disappeared. Just gave me goose bumps.

Bozeman Airport Medalions - Sacajawea Finished today - Recieved Male and Female Skulls Today

I was asked by Jim Dolan, a Bozman Montana Artist, who creates welded sculptures (http://www.jimdolanart.com/), to help with a project he's doing for the Bozeman Airport. I'm doing 6 medallions of Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and Albert Gallatine. Merriwether Lewis, and William clark, along with Sacajawea, made up the "Corps of Discovery Expedition" (1804--1806). It was the first transcontinental expedition to the Pacific Coast by the United States. Commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson. Their objects were both scientific and commercial -- to study the area's plants, animal life, and geography, and to discover how the region could be exploited economically. Part of that expedition was to find the headwaters of the Missouri River. Three rivers formed the headwaters of the Missouri River and they were named after President Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin in July of 1805. Those headwaters are just 45 miles north of where I live. It's kinda cool.

John Lovewell (October 14, 1691 -- May 8, 1725) was a famous Ranger in the 18th century who fought during Dummer's War (also known as Lovewell's War). He lived in present-day Nashua, New Hampshire. He fought in Dummer's War as a militia captain, leading three expeditions against the Abenaki Indians.
Lovewell was commemorated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with his poem, "The Battle of Lovells Pond", and by Nathaniel Hawthorne with his story, "Roger Malvin's Burial".

Geronimo, born June 16, 1829 -- February 17, 1909) was a prominent Native American leader of the Chiricahua Apache who fought against Mexico and the United States for their expansion into Apache tribal lands for several decades during the Apache Wars. Allegedly, "Geronimo" was the name given to him during a Mexican incident. His Chiricahua name is often rendered as Goyathlay or Goyahkla in English.
After an attack by a company of Mexican soldiers killed many members of his family in 1858, Geronimo joined revenge attacks on the Mexicans. During his career as a war chief, Geronimo was notorious for consistently urging raids and war upon Mexican Provinces and their various towns, and later against American locations across Arizona, New Mexico, and western Texas.
In 1886 Geronimo surrendered to U.S. authorities after a lengthy pursuit. As a prisoner of war in old age he became a celebrity and appeared in fairs but was never allowed to return to the land of his birth. He later regretted his surrender and claimed the conditions he made had been ignored. Geronimo died in 1909 from complications of pneumonia at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Tryptophan - Yep I got a Tryptophan Attack today

I ate Turkey at Gloria 'D's house this afternoon. I'm so sleepy now that I can't even think of sculpting... Turkey does have the makings of a natural sedative in it, an Amino Acid called tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid, meaning that the body can't manufacture it. The body has to get tryptophan and other essential amino acids from food. Tryptophan helps the body produce the B-vitamin niacin, which, in turn, helps the body produce serotonin, a remarkable chemical that acts as a calming agent in the brain and plays a key role in sleep. So you might think that if you eat a lot of turkey, your body would produce more serotonin and you would feel calm and want a nap.

This is the last day on the small commission. The last one was a door handle that was going to be topped with an Indian young man, and a young Indian woman. This one will be topped with Eagle Heads that Trent Shearn sculpted. Trent's, Stonelight Works, has placed lighting fixtures in such homes as that of Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith's home. So he's in some of the most famous homes in this country.

Johnny France is probably the most well known person in our area. He speaks haltingly, but it's because he was nearly killed, when a horse kicked him in the head. He's very lucky to even be alive today.
He's had two TV made movies, and a segment on A&E's Channel's Fugitive Chronicles, titled "Nichols", made about an incident that happened years ago when he was sheriff of Madison County. Recently the Robert Redford movie, "Buck" feature Johnny in it. Buck, the main character, said he owed his life to Johnny France. Starting Geronimo - A Bronze by me, from 1978, brought to my studio

I started the design of the Geronimo piece today. Didn't get far though. Was visited by a young man who acquired one of my early bronzes (see pictures of it at http://adayinthelifeofalemon.blogspot.com). He was a good Samaritan and loaned money to a lady who needed to pay her rent. She had a hard time paying him back so she gave him this bronze as payment. This bronze is worth thousands more than what he loaned. He's going to try and sell it to help himself out and hopefully help the lady out as well.

2011 Ennis Montana Hunters Feed

The town of Ennis is located on the banks of the Madison River in the Madison Valley, in southwest Montana. Every October, the Friday preceding the annual big game hunt, the people of the town and the valley, put together their best chili, pasta, or Mexican dishes, made from local game. They're given an entry number and then they hand out their food to everyone who walks down the street. The visitors to this feed come from all over the country and the world. They then vote for the food, by their number, and one of them will win bragging rights for the coming year. It's so much fun. The people are friendly and outgoing. The food is terrific. You don't go home hungry.

Delivered the two clays of 4 Bears and Worth Many Horses to Don, who'll be showing them in Las Vegas. I met up with him at Northwest Artcasting in Bozeman Montana. He was loading a monumental cowboy on horseback piece by another artist, into the back of his truck, for the same show in Vegas.
I then looked over the first waxes of Prairie Warrior.
Then back at my studio later that afternoon, I prepaired the TruForm armature for a new piece I'll be starting next week.

This piece portrays the dilemma of courtship. This Blackfoot Warrior, "Four Bears", has practiced for weeks, to compose the perfect song for his flute, to impress his love interest, "Worth Many Horses". He's perplexed, because she seems not to be paying attention to him, and she's hiding her feelings. She has been moved.

Gold of Autum Found in Yellowstone Park Today

Took a short drive to Yellowstone National Park this morning.
Established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872, Yellowstone Park became the first national park. Yellowstone National Park is located primarily in the U.S. state of Wyoming, although it also extends into Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone was the first national park in the world, and is known for its wildlife and its many geothermal features, especially Old Faithful Geyser, one of the most popular features in the park.
It has many types of ecosystems, but the sub alpine forest is dominant.
Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years.The region was bypassed during the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the early 19th century. Aside from visits by mountain men during the early-to-mid-19th century, organized exploration did not begin until the late 1860s. The The U.S. Army was commissioned to oversee the park just after its establishment. In 1917, administration of the park was transferred to the National Park Service, which had been created the previous year.
Hundreds of structures have been built and are protected for their architectural and historical significance, and researchers have examined more than 1,000 archaeological sites.
